(Ronnie and Her Bloody DVD) Tour 2008
Fancy being smuggled into Bosnia? Or dodging bullets in Jerusalem? Or jumping from a burning building in Antwerp? What about being whisked away for a day or two by the Bedouin? It’s all just another day at the office for ex-Adelaide singer songwriter, Ronnie Taheny. Adventures are taken in her stride and with a smile on her face. Breaking into the Athens Olympic Arena and doing a lap of honour was not her best idea in early 2004 but it seems these stunts cannot be stopped. Taheny is a larrikin both on and off the stage as she continues to use her annual European tour as an excuse for living the life of a renegade.
(Ronnie and Her Bloody DVD) is the 2008 tour that will take her to her favourite European destinations in order to support the release of this new DVD. The 2-hour DVD was recorded in Australia and contains a 14-track concert segment with Adelaide-based buddies Jarrad Payne on percussion, drums, bass and vocals and Michael Bahlij on keys and vocals.
The DVD “Extras” section gives us some insight into how this shy but dynamic farm girl starts life with eleven brothers and sisters and ends up with an international music career. It also highlights Ronnie’s experiences over the last twelve years since she relocated to London/Ireland in 1995. It exposes her travels, passion, wit, irreverence, bravery and buoyancy and shows how she’s managed to combine them together with a spirit and gusto that has come to define her and her music. Originally leaving her native Yorke Peninsula to form and front the outrageous “This House Is Jumping” in the late Eighties, she successfully used this apprenticeship to launch a solo career. It was in Melbourne, 1993 that Taheny was recognised and awarded the “Most Outstanding Individual Performer in Australia” but had already established “Arty Records in 1994 and bought her ticket to Europe, seeing the need to get to larger populations and compete at a global level.
Within the first year of living in Ireland she’d worked with Fairport Convention and Ani diFranco in the Galway Arts Festival. She also had her first chart success with “Saviour” which enabled her to work with some of her favourite peers, David Gray, Luka Bloom, Tom Robinson and Billy Bragg. History would repeat itself in 1996 when Ronnie was chosen by the Irish Music Industry as Ireland’s “Best Unsigned Act”. She was then invited to New York for showcases in Central Park and the then legendary CBGB’s. Because of Continental touring demands, Ronnie based herself in Germany and in 2002 her writing skills paid off. She scored contracts with industry heavyweights Warner and BMG in a move that has taken her career to a whole new level. For one solitary and self-represented artist these have been remarkable achievements but Ronnie wouldn’t know, she’s never had time to look back.
Live, Taheny has a cheeky and charismatic stage presence Her lively shows always come with some amusing anecdotes, acerbic poems or spontaneous one-liners. Whether on piano or 12-string guitar her passion, energy and irreverence can’t help but envelop you. Taheny is still one of Adelaide’s most successful independent musical exports and a great example of what you’d get if you crossed Patti Smith with Pippi Longstocking.
